Comparison of Advanced CANDU and Advanced PWR designs

   

Scope:

 

Review and compare relevant design features of the Advanced CANDU, and Advanced PWR reactor (AP1000 or AP600) heat transport systems, and compare to OPG and BP reactors (Pickering, or Darlington, or Bruce; each student to use the reactor design at the station where employed).

Focus on the following aspects:

  • Safety margins in selected important accident sequences
  • Design robustness
  • Operational issues
  • Licensibility
  • Market competitiveness

As part of the assessment support your arguments with calculations, such as:

    1. System and component volume ratios
    2. Stored energy levels
    3. Linear power differences
    4. CHF margins
    5. Thermal efficiency of the secondary side
    6. Other relevant features and calculations chosen by the student as important in making the case

  • ACR-700 Technical Description document
  • AP1000 and AP600 Safety Analysis Report (Chapters 4, 5 and 10)
  • Pickering, or Darlington, or Bruce Safety Analysis Report (Chapters 4, 5 and 10) (students to provide)
