Master Volvo List

Please note that, as of 2015-10-11, these Volvo pages are no longer being maintained but will remain available as is.

Most sources of Volvo information typically state that engine x was used in models y and z for a range of years, etc. Fine, but most owners / boneyard pickers want to know what engines, transmissions, etc are in a particular model in a given year and, perhaps more importantly, what other years and models have the same components. That's what the following attempts to provide. The information below has been gleaned from the web sources listed below and various brochures and books that I have on hand. Corrections and additions are both welcome and sorely needed. Just about every production Volvo car ever produced is listed below. Non-North America information is scant. Miscellaneous: Tips, Special Interest Topics, Common Problems...

Here is some info on problems that are common to a particular model or component. Comments, additions, corrections? Contact me.

  • Tips and Hints - just some simple things that I have come across that might prove useful to you (700 series based).
  • The B6304F Inline 6 Porous block problem. Some, not all by any means, of these engines used in the 1992 to 1995 (or even 1996) 960 cars suffered from a block porosity problem due to improper casting. Check the engine database to see which cars used this engine. For more information on the subject, see www.BRICKBOARD.com faq.
  • PVR V-6 engine (B27F, B28F, B280F). This engine was a product of a joint Peugeot, Volvo, Renault venture and was used in various 260, 760 an 780 cars between 1975 and 1990. It proved unreliable. Check the engine database to see which cars used this engine. For more information on the subject, see www.swedishbricks.net. Look under the SwedishBricks FAQ page.
  • Wiring harness for 1983 to 1987 (and possibly early 1988) Volvo cars. These harnesses tend to crack and deteriorate prematurely, more so with the turbo because of the added heat. Apparently, the plastic coating used in these harnesses were made to be environmentally friendly, i.e. biodegradable. This was a commendable try that unfortunately didn't work to the car owner's advantage or to the environment's advantage since replacement harnesses had to be manufactured and eventually will have to be disposed! Check the model database to see a list of cars in the years mentioned above that used this engine.
  • Rebuild of a B21A engine in a 1982 245DL (Canada). No pics, just a detailed procedure list.
  • 740/940 16 Valve (B234F) information - technical info for this sweet car / engine combination. Also contains a link to a forum thread on this engine.
  • Front seat lumbar bracket repair.
  • Commentary - What it REALLY means to be a Volvo nut...

  • Please note: If you have a question or a problem and you think I might know the answer, then, guess what? I probably don't know the answer! I am just a back yard tinkerer, not an experienced or qualified mechanic. Since creating this Volvo site, I have received many questions on mechanical issues that are way beyond me. I guess that people think that someone nuts enough to create this site MUST know Volvos inside and out. I wish I did...but I don't. So if you have a question that is not answered on this site, I suggest that you go to one of the forums listed above. Chances are that you will receive an answer within a day or two. That said, I will answer email as best I can. Just don't get your hopes up.
